A culture of leisure leads to a culture of discontent without action. It is profoundly not true that we are beasts of leisure. Our minds have absolutely no way to handle all that down time. We are inherently problem solvers. We are built to adapt; and without stimulus to adapt to, we use our creativity to create unnecessary stimuli so that we can exercise our ability to adapt.
Yet we are not inherently built to go non-stop either. It is in those “down” times that we find the best adaptations.
The ironic thing is that if we came up with the perfect formula to teach us all how to balance our action, leisure and down time, it wouldn’t take long for the formula to fail. Our adaptation gene does not turn itself off when we reach nirvana.
